WLA - Shakespeare and the Uses of Imagination: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Thursday March 18, 2010
1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
Rimer Room
On four Thursday afternoons in March, Judson Scruton will give presentations exploring the theme of imagination in Shakespeare's major dramatic genres. Looking closely at selected scenes in text and film, Mr. Scruton will discuss A Midsummer Night's Dream, 1 Henry IV, Hamlet, and The Tempest. How does Shakespeare use the idea of poetic and dramatic imagination in comedy, history, tragedy, and romance? How have some contemporary films of these plays responded to Shakespeare's metaphoric leaps? How do we respond to these poetic and dramatic imaginings?
Judson Scruton has taught year-long courses in Shakespeare at university and has lead study/travel programs to workshops at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has written and directed a college production of The Class, a play dealing with a course in Hamlet in an urban American university in the 60's.
