WLA - Weir Farm Artist-in-Residence Exhibition/Reception: Annie Varnot
Tuesday August 24, 2010
6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
Rimer Room
August brings Annie Varnot to the Weir Farm artist in residency program. Annie is interested in creating larger structures from the accumulation of one material and the more mundane the material, the more the possibilities of ironic transformation. She says that on one level, 'I am interested in using pedestrian materials, in this instance, drinking straws, to create something entirely unearthly or unimaginable. On another level, I am interested in recycling non-biodegradable waste to create work that references nature and its beauty in hopes that consumers think more about mass produced waste and how it contributes to global warming. it is my aim through the accumulation of drinking straws cut and glued in a particular way to evoke glowing topographies, New York City biota, swelling oceans with human habitations positioned on stilts, and florescent coral reefs.' She goes on to say that 'the straws are translucent and channel light creating an intensity and saturation of color that appears at once organic and at the same time artificial...they come in a variety of colors and diameters, allowing me to merge my skills in painting with my need to create sculptures’.

Weir Farm's Artist in Residence program (AIR) selects twelve artists to live and work at Weir Farm each year.
