Come explore the magic and wonder of storytelling!

Free program for all ages !!! A world of stories comes to life on the faces of the audience.

In his series of Transformation! Christopher Agostino presents traditional folktales and original stories — illustrated by his amazing face painting on the faces of audience volunteers. In a playful storytelling style combined with mask and makeup art from the same world cultures that tell such tales, he creates a unique performance to completely engage any audience.
Agostino is a performer and visual artist who began painting faces in 1976 and never stopped (Why would he? It's too much fun!). From his training in theatrical makeup and graphic arts he developed a technique for quickly transforming a human face. Drawing inspiration from cultural sources such as the Amazon to Africa to the Chinese Opera. Christopher paints in a unique mask-like style with bold designs creating faces that are more than decorations, transforming the wearing into a new identity.

Registration is suggested due to limited seating. For more information and to register visit our online calendar at www.southingtonlibrary.org, or call 860-628-0947 x 5 the Reference/Information Desk.

BIG READ program film screening of the Maltese Falcon with Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor
book jacket image of ISBN: 9781419814839

The story concerns a San Francisco private detective's dealings with three unscrupulous adventurers who compete to obtain a fabulous jewel-encrusted statuette of a falcon. The 1941 movie is one of the most popular and best classic detective mysteries ever made, and many film historians consider it the first in the dark film noir genre in Hollywood. It leaves the audience with a distinctly down-beat conclusion and bitter taste. The low-budget film reflects the remarkable directorial debut of John Huston (previously a screenwriter) who efficiently and skillfully composed and filmed this American classic for Warner Bros. studios, with great dialogue, deceitful characters, and menacing scenes.

The precocious director Huston was very faithful to Dashiell Hammett's 1929 novel The Maltese Falcon, that had originally appeared as a five-part serialized story in a pulp fiction, detective story magazine publication named Black Mask.

The 1941 movie stars Humphrey Bogart as private investigator Sam Spade, Mary Astor as his femme fatale client, Sydney Greenstreet in his film debut, and Peter Lorre. The film was Huston's directorial debut and was nominated for three Academy Awards.
