| Monday, April 12 12:00PM-3:30PM Large Meeting Room | World War II Veterans of the Lexington Council on Aging This month's program entitled, 'The Battle of Tsushima and its Aftermath, 1905', will be presented by Ron Rosenthal.
The Battle of Tsushima was fought during the Russo-Japanese War. Admiral Togo won his famous victory on May 27-28, 1905. This battle was the only decisive fleet action fought by steel-built battleships, up to that time. In the fighting, the Russian fleet was effectively destroyed, with 21 ships sunk and six captured. Of the Russian crews, 4,380 men were killed and 5,917 were captured. Only three ships escaped to Vladivostok, while another six were interned in neutral ports. Japanese losses were a remarkably light: three torpedo boats, as well as 117 killed and 583 wounded. The defeat at Tsushima badly damaged Russia's international prestige, while signaling Japan's ascent as a naval power. In the wake of Tsushima, Russia was forced to sue for peace. Ron Rosenthal is a retired Orthopaedic Surgeon, with a life-long interest in history. He served as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Vietnam, and after holding faculty positions at Washington University, Vanderbilt University, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He has led Study Groups at Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement and Lifelong Learning at Regis College. He has previously presented programs to the Lexington Veterans' Association on 'Jefferson Davis', 'Medical Advances Through Wars', and 'The Founding of the U.S. Navy'. Please join us for this Program, as all are welcome. Coffee is generously provided by Starbucks (Lexington Center, Scott LeBlanc, Manager). When you patronize this Starbucks coffee shop, please thank them for their continued support of the Lexington Veterans' Association. Weather Note: In case of questionable or adverse weather conditions, please call the Library (781-862-6288) prior to coming to the Program. If the Library has closed, there will be an automated phone message to that effect. | ![]() | ||
