Pancreatic Cancer Action Network

Join us on the second Monday of each month as we explore different worlds in the mystery genre.

Joins us in this low-key, 20 minute program of songs, fingerplays, and rhymes. Enthusiasm and participation encouraged and welcomed.

The Lexington Veterans' Association under the auspices of the Friends of the COA will present their monthly program on Monday, April 8, 2013, at 1:15 P.M., at Cary Memorial Library (Meeting Room), at 1874 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington Center. The program entitled: “Bloody Shiloh-April 6-7, 1862” will be presented by Ron Rosenthal.

The Battle of Shiloh, April 6 and 7 1862, was the first major battle of the Civil War--where trained (although untested) armies faced each other under competent generals. Shiloh would result in more American casualties than the entire Revolutionary War, and would set the stage for future battles. With few exceptions, future battles would result in one side or the other being driven from the field, but retreating in good order, reorganizing, and being ready to fight another battle in a few weeks. Shiloh also proved the importance of control of rivers, demonstrated the vulnerability of the commanders who still rode in front of their troops, and resulted in the development of the first tent hospitals to deal with the staggering number of casualties. Shiloh was also where Generals U.S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Braxton Bragg and others who would become leaders in the war to follow made their first major appearances.

Shiloh demonstrated that the war would not be won by a single great battle, but would go on until one side was either overrun or exhausted.

Learn with LEGOs! In this hour-long workshop, children will use our LEGO kits to build Gator Jacks to learn about first class levers and principles of friction. All children will go home with a color page of the activity, and a photo slide show will be available. LEGOs are not taken home. Presented by Children’s Technology Workshop.

A book group for people who like many different kinds of books. The book group selections include fiction, nonfiction, memoirs, and mysteries.

Let your imagination take you to the queen's castle while listening and moving to the music of Brahms' Hungarian Dance. Then, switch gears and isolate your head, arms and legs, moving, one at a time with each tick and each tock of Leroy Anderson's Syncopated Clock. Take a break with a soothing story, accompanied by matching music. Learn to keep a steady beat by playing rhythm games and singing finger play songs. Let your movements tell the story for each song; come and join the fun! All this in a half hour of music and movement with Ms. Rubi!

Students in grade 6 and up are invited to register for a free comic art workshop presented by Andy Fish.

The workshop will include lessons on creating characters using shape, art styles, cover a brief history of the artform and then feature a hands on how to demo, offering techniques and tricks for storytelling.

ANDY FISH studied art at The School of Visual Arts in New York City as well as Rhode Island School of Design, and has also attended Clark University School at the Worcester Art Museum and Worcester State College. He currently teaches youth and adult art programs at the Higgins Education Wing of the Worcester Art Museum as well as at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. He is the author of four how to art books and six graphic novels.

Children of all ages and abilities and their caregivers are invited to get crafty with us this summer. Our popular craft program returns with new crafts and old favorites! Stay for half an hour or the entire hour and a half; you can make your craft as simple or as complicated as you want. Markers and paper are always available as well. Children under age 8 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration necessary.

Bring your own picnic dinner, spread out a blanket, and enjoy a family movie in our cozy Meeting Room. The room will open at 6:00 p.m., 30 minutes before the start of the movie.

Wednesday, April 17 1:00PM-1:45PM Large Meeting Room	Teen Event - Comic Art Workshop Students in grade 6 and up are invited to register for a free comic art workshop presented by Andy Fish. The workshop will include lessons on creating characters using shape, art styles, cover a brief history of the artform and then feature a hands on how to demo, offering techniques and tricks for storytelling. ANDY FISH studied art at The School of Visual Arts in New York City as well as Rhode Island School of Design, and has also attended Clark University School at the Worcester Art Museum and Worcester State College. He currently teaches youth and adult art programs at the Higgins Education Wing of the Worcester Art Museum as well as at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. He is the author of four how to art books and six graphic novels.
