| Thursday, May 06 7:00PM-9:00PM Large Meeting Room | Cary Library Presents Kathy Jacob, Author of King of the Lobby King of the Lobby tells the story of how one man harnessed delicious food, fine wine, and good conversation to the task of becoming the most influential lobbyist of the Gilded Age. Sam Ward was a colorful character. Scion of an old and honorable family, best friend of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and charming man-about-Washington, Ward held his own in an era crowded with larger-than-life personalities. Kathy Jacob's engaging account shows how the 'king' earned his crown through cookery and conversation and how this son of wealth and privilege helped to create a questionable profession in a city that then, as now, rests on power and influence.

| Monday, May 10 12:00PM-3:30PM Large Meeting Room | World War II Veterans of the Lexington Council on Aging The Forgotten War, The Aleutian Islands, will be presented by Warren Winslow and Master
Sergeant Ralph H. Winslow (ret.). Warren Winslow, a retired history teacher of the Lexington Public Schools, will speak on this topic and will be joined by his father, Ralph, 90 years old, who will recount his combat experiences in the Aleutian Islands, with specific attention to the battle for the island of Attu. The attack upon the Aleutian Islands by Japan brought early World War II occupation and combat to American soil. This invasion, the first since the War of 1812, created an embarrassing intrusion upon America. The United States had to react to meet this aggression and to quell Japanese war strategy, that, if successful, could be strategically disastrous to the west coasts of both Canada and the United States. Japanese military presence and air bases in the Aleutians could not be tolerated because of the potential for the bombing of our west coast cities and of attacking supply ships going to and from Russia. Also on May 10, we will make another shipment of items to 1st Lieutenant Rajiv Srinivasan for his Platoon in the Fifth Stryker Brigade, serving in Afghanistan. Most desirable and difficult to obtain items include: Starbucks instant coffee packets (available at Starbucks, Lexington Center), packages of trail mix, music CD's and movie DVD's. Our previous shipment, along with packages of Red Sox gear from the Red Sox Foundation, was extremely well-received and fantastically appreciated by the troops. If you prefer to contribute cash for shipping/postage, this and all items will be graciously accepted: please bring these to the Program. Again, Rajiv has been updating his blog approximately weekly, with very interesting and informative accounts. Just click onto: http://www.rajivsrinivasan.wordpress.com/ Please join us for this Program, as all are welcome. Coffee is generously provided by Starbucks (Lexington Center, Scott LeBlanc, Manager). When you patronize this Starbucks coffee shop, please thank them for their continued support of the Lexington Veterans' Association. Also, special thanks to those who bake or bring cookies/cake to our programs: this is greatly appreciated. | ![]() | ||

| Thursday, May 20 7:00PM-9:00PM Large Meeting Room | Cary Library Presents Elyssa East, Author of Dogtown: Death and Enchantment in a New England Ghost Town Author Elyssa East will discuss her new book, Dogtown: Death and Enchantment in a New England Ghost Town Dogtown -- an isolated colonial ruin and surrounding forest in Gloucester, Massachusetts -- has long exerted a powerful influence over artists, writers, eccentrics, and nature lovers. But its history is also woven through with tales of witches, supernatural sightings, pirates, former slaves, and drifters. In 1984, a brutal murder took place there: a horrific event that continues to haunt Gloucester even today. Author Elyssa East interlaces the story of this grisly murder with the strange, dark history of this wilderness ghost town and explores the possibility that certain landscapes wield their own unique power. Join us as she takes us to an unforgettable place brimming with tragedy, eccentricity, and fascinating history | ![]() | ||
