As part of a special all-school community service day, Lawrence Academy students, along with some very special puppets, will be hosting a special story-telling!

Why has mask making been such a vital part of every culture through the ages? How have masks been used? Why have masks of tribal cultures influenced individual artists like Picasso and Matisse and schools of artists like the Futurists, and Cubists? Why do they still interest today? How can we participate in this tradition? These questions form the basis for a preliminary discussion featuring Mexican, African and Asian masks as well as terra cotta masks by the artist. A demonstration focusing on the expressive nature of masks and their influence on artists follows. Participants then sculpt their own terra cotta mask to take home and paint when dry. Instructor Ann McCrea is an artist and teacher who has found creativity is a common part of our humanity. For nearly 30 years, she has taught more than 15,000 children in schools, libraries and her studio classes. Maximum 20 participants. Open to those in grades 6-12.

Each program is limited to 15 children on a first come, first serve basis. Preference is given to Groton residents.

October Sky is based on the memoir Rocket Boys by Homer Hickman who was inspired as a young high school student to attempt to build and launch a rocket after seeing the Soviet Satellite Sputnik streak overhead. Read the book, come and enjoy pizza and the movie and stay for a discussion of the book and the movie from 7:30-8:30 PM following the movie. Movie is Rated PG.

Anime and manga fans gather to share their drawings, and talk about favorite manga and view anime. Tonight we will watch episodes of Heroic Age. Long ago, the advanced Tribe of Gold vanished from the vast universe. In the void left by their departure, the tyrannical Tribe of Silver ascended to rule, forcing mankind – the Tribe of Iron – to the brink of extinction. Now humanity wanders the cosmos in search of a savior. Episodes are rated TVPG. Bring your drawings and art supplies and sketch together with your friends. Refreshments will be served. For grades 6-12.

This month's reading is 'The Bacchae' by Euripides. This is a structured group that follows the Great Books program. Discussions are led by 2 group leaders, and follow the Shared Inquiry method. The group meets from 7:00 to 8:45 PM in the Community Room (lower level). For more information, call 978-448-8000.

This month's selection is 'Into the Wild' by Jon Krakauer. Participation in the Book Discussion Group is free and open to all interested adults (co-ed). No registration is necessary - just read the book (or not!) and come to the meeting. You can come to just one meeting, or come to all! The group meets from 7:00 - 8:45 PM in Sibley Hall (mid level).

The GPL Book Discussion Group meets on November 17 this month to discuss 'Into the Wild' by Jon Krakauer. The screening of the film is a follow up to their discussion. Open to all and free of charge.

The film is 148 minutes long and is MPAA rated R for language and some nudity.
