Monday, February 01 7:00PM-9:00PM Great Hall | Moving Pictures Film Series: Akeelah and The Bee
The Atheneum concludes its series of Spelling Bee movies, just in time for the Nantucket Spelling Bee, scheduled for Sat. Feb 6 at the Nantucket High School.
Akeelah and the Bee is a 2006 American dramedy film written and directed by Doug Atchison. It tells the story of Akeelah Anderson, portrayed by Keke Palmer, an 11-year-old girl who participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, her mother, portrayed by Angela Bassett, schoolmates, and also her coach, portrayed by Laurence Fishburne. It also explores issues of education in the black community.
The film was developed over a period of 10 years by Doug Atchison, the germ of the idea having started after his watching the Scripps National Spelling Bee of 1994 and combined with his experiences spent tutoring disadvantaged students in the area around the University of Southern California, where he attended film school.
After four years of trying to secure funding for the film, the documentary film Spellbound came out in 2002 and perhaps, according to one producer, Sid Ganis, facilitated funding. Spellbound features a black girl, Ashley White, from Washington, D.C., in rough parallel to the independent idea developed in Akeelah and the Bee.

At fourteen, Robey is ill-prepared for such a journey, but with a sense of adventure he sets off wearing the coat his mother sewed to ensure his safety: blue on one side, gray on the other. Monday, February 15 7:00PM-9:00PM Great Hall | Moving Pictures Film Series: 'Run Lola Run'
The Nantucket Atheneum presents a film series with the theme: 'Messing With Time.' February is that month where calendar-keepers make their adjustments to keep time on track. With that in mind we present three films based on the notion of manipulating time.
Run Lola Run is a 1998 German thriller film written and directed by Tom Tykwer, and starring Franka Potente as Lola and Moritz Bleibtreu as Manni. The story follows a woman who needs to obtain 100,000 Deutsche Mark in 20 minutes to save her boyfriend's life.
Set against the gritty urban scenescape of Berlin and a pounding techno soundtrack, Run Lola Run is a frenetic, inventive existential thriller that explores the life-altering impact of seemingly inconsequential actions. A pulse-raising race against time, the film employs a startling array of innovative techniques to present three separate scenarios, all departing from a single split-second decision Lola makes.
Franka Potente, who also sings on the soundtrack, is mesmerizing as Lola. Winner of the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival; Best Film, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director at the German Film Awards; 1998 Bambi Award; and the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Film at the Seattle International Film Festival.
In German with English subtitles.
The series concludes Feb. 22 with 'The Time Traveler's Wife'

Wednesday, February 17 5:00PM-6:30PM Gallery | World Wide Voices Book Discussion Group: 'The Last Life,' by Claire Massud
From Publishers Weekly
Loss of innocence for a young girl, her family and her nation is the theme of Messud's resonant second novel.Plangent with the memories of a pivotal two-year period in the life of teenage narrator Sagesse LaBasse, the novel flashes back to three generations of the LaBasse family, pieds noirs who fled Algeria during the 1960s. Messud (When the World Was Steady) sustains an elegiac tone in describing a seemingly ordered world that in reality is precarious; the LaBasses erect futile defenses against tragedies they are unable to prevent. In striking scenes, Messud recreates the last days of French rule in Algeria and the anomie of the ex-colonials, exiles from the land they love and strangers in their mother country. Sometimes these frequent flashbacks are awkward and not well integrated into the narrative. Yet some scenes of Sagesse acting out her adolescent insecurity during a summer with her relatives in New England, for example are small gems. Questions of morality and mortality, of choice or fate or historical destiny, permeate the chronicle, adding coherence to a moving and insightful story.
The discussion is facilitated by Maureen Beck and Molly Anderson and open to all. | |
Wednesday, February 17 7:00PM-9:00PM Coffin School, 4 Winter Street | One Book One Island Film Series: 'Outlaw Josey Wales'
Josey Wales is a peaceful farmer in the days near the end of the Civil
War. After his home is burned and his family murdered, he hardens into
a human bullet - dedicated to destroying the renegades who took his
'life.' He joins a band of unreconstructed rebel guerilla fighters who
continue to fight the Union - even after the official surrender of the
Confederacy - an action which makes them, legally, outlaws. Josey is
driven by vengeance, but after a while, that's not enough. Back before
his own personal Holocaust, he had been a builder - of home, family,
farm, and life. And no matter how much ice he's wrapped himself in,
down inside there's still the soul of a living man. While Wales exists,
he's pulled by this hidden yearning to Live. Each day offers him
chances to remember, to assuage his yearning, to begin again. And the
movie shows us how Josey Wales - a mere seeker of vengeance - learns to
live again, rededicated to the values he chose so long ago.
One Book One Island 2010 has selected 'Coal Black Horse,' a 2007 novel about a 14 year-old boy searching the Civil War-torn South for his soldier father.
All films will be screened at the Coffin School and are free of charge.

frequent and lengthy intervals, he attempts to build a stable future
with the beautiful young heiress he loves.

Friday, February 26 7:00PM-9:00PM Great Hall | Sustainable Nantucket Film Series:' A Sea Change'
Imagine a world without fish. It’s a frightening premise, and it’s happening right now.
A Sea Change
follows the journey of retired history teacher Sven Huseby on his quest
to discover what is happening to the world’s oceans. After reading
Elizabeth Kolbert’s “The Darkening Sea,” Sven becomes obsessed with the
rising acidity of the oceans and what this “sea change” bodes for
mankind.
His quest takes him to Alaska, California, Washington, and
Norway as he uncovers a worldwide crisis that most people are unaware
of. Speaking with oceanographers, marine biologists, climatologists,
and artists, Sven discovers that global warming is only half the story
of the environmental catastrophe that awaits us. Excess carbon dioxide
is dissolving in our oceans, changing sea water chemistry.
The more
acidic water makes it difficult for tiny creatures at the bottom of the
food web to form their shells. The effects could work their way up to
the fish 1 billion people depend upon for their source of protein.
