Invasive Plant Lecture: Peter Alden   Link to related url for more information
decorative image Peter Alden (author of 15 bird, mammal and eco-travel books) will present 'An Update on the Invasive Alien Plant Crisis in Massachusetts.'

Two dozen or so non-native plants are running roughshod over native ecosystems. What habitats are most and least affected? What impact has the 2007 banning of the import or sale of 100 plants had on our ecosystems? What federal, state and local actions are going on? What is the latest on Japenese Stilt Grass, the major Mile-a-minute infestation in Canton, and the massive Kudzu show in Needham? Can we contain these latest newbies?

Alden helped create the world’s first eco-tourism travel department for the Massachusetts Audubon Society and alter became the Vice President of Lindblad Travel where his safaris and nature tours have spanned every continent.

He currently divides his time writing books and articles, lecturing and leading expedition cruises and safaris throughout the world.

The 4th Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative (NBI) Assessment Week is hosted by the NBI (http://www.nantucketbiodiversityinitiative.org), a partnership of Nantucket conservation organizations, universities, non-governmental organizations, and individuals interested in documenting the biodiversity of the islands and adjacent waters and monitoring and conserving that biodiversity over time.

The purpose of the NBI Week is to inventory and monitor many of the species of plants and animals found on Nantucket and to educate the public about the importance of protecting the rare elements that contribute to Nantucket’s rich local biodiversity. Throughout the week, scientists will be giving lectures, tours and programs in their field of expertise. All are open to the public. This will be an exciting opportunity to work with island and off-island naturalists and scientists.

During their Atheneum talk the group will share stories, images and video from the expedition as well as discuss the group's mission and findings to date .

Along the way they have worked with school students in all the countries and created  an educational network between 15,000 students in low-lying coastal communities.

International Film: The Overture
decorative imageBased on the life of Luang Pradit Pairoh (Sorn Silapabanleng) the most revered traditional Thai music master who lived during the reigns of Kings Rama V to VIII, the movie traces the life of Sorn, who picked up the ra-nad ek (Thai xylophone) mallets as a small child and played all his life.

The backdrop to Sorn's life tale is the story of Thailand's classical music from its golden age during the reign of King Rama V to near extinction after the end of the absolute monarchy when the government banned it as uncivilised in the 1930s -- a time when Field Marshall Plaek Pibulsongkram tried to push the Kingdom into the modern era.

The film shifts back and forth from the time when Sorn was a young man, playing in a xylophone duel with the intense Kun In, to the 1940s, when Thailand was under Japanese occupation and Sorn's playing would provide some inspiration to the oppressed citizenry of the time.

Released in 2004. In Thai with English subtitles. 100 minutes in length.
