German Paper Stars at Saltmarsh Senior Center
decorative image Join Nancy Tyrer to learn how to make these traditional folded paper stars.

These handmade paper stars have been found in various forms through all cultures worldwide and are often referred to as Moravian Stars, Christmas Stars, German Star, Froebel’s Stars along with other many other names.

Traditionally these folded stars were made with white paper. These crafty works of art are not really origami, but closer to a form of basketry. They are folded from four strips of paper, dipped in melted paraffin, and sprinkled with glitter to create a three dimensional, sixteen-pointed star.

The stars were originally hung outside to decorate evergreen and shrubbery during the holiday season. The intent of dipping these stars in wax was a weather proofing technique to keep the stars from rain and snow damage. We won't be dipping ours in wax so they are suitable for use indoors as tree decorations or as package ties for the holidays. Pre-registration required – call Saltmarsh to register (508) 228-4490.

Sustainable Nantucket Documentary Film Series: 'Coal Country'
decorative image

Coal Country is a stunning new documentary that reveals the
devastation of mountaintop removal coal mining to the forests, streams, and
communities of Appalachia.

Produced by Mari-Lynn Evans and Phylis Geller, Coal
Country
brings us inside the lives of Appalachian residents who are
directly threatened by mountaintop removal, a destructive mining practice where mountaintops are
blasted away to expose the coal; the waste is then dumped in the waterways
of nearby communities. As it takes us through each stage of coal mining and
processing, Coal Country reveals the shocking true cost of America's
over-reliance on coal.

This screening is a 40 minute short version of the feature length film and will be followed by discussion.

World Wide Voices Book Discussion Group: 'The End,' by Salvatore Scibona
book jacket image - click for card catalog entryFrom Publishers Weekly
The Italian immigrants in this exceptional debut collide and collapse in a polyphonic narrative that is part novel, part epic prose poem spanning the first half of the 20th century.

Costanza Marini, a Cleveland widow who performs abortions of such a high grade that clinicians come take stock of her methods, has decided, among other aspirations, to save Lina, her young seamstress protégée and heiress, from spinsterhood. Intersecting sporadically with the machinations of Mrs. Marini during the sweltering feast of the Assumption is Rocco, the baker of the Italian community of Elephant Park, who is poised to leave his parochial Midwestern enclave for the first time to seek out his lost family. In doing so, he must face America and eventually ends up adrift near the Canadian border while looking for 'the New Jersey.' Rocco, whose fate, regrettably, is never explicated, inhabits (and narrates) the novel's radiant beginning and is emblematic of both Scibona's calibrated precision and the story's potent humanity. This ravenous prose offers its share of challenges, but Scibona's portrayal of the lost world of Elephant Park is a literary tour de force.

The book discussion is facilitated by Maureen Beck and Molly Anderson and open to all. Future discussions include: December 16, shared poetry selections; Jan. 20 'The Last Life,' by Claire Massud; Feb. 17 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett; March 17 'The Gathering' by Anne Enright; April 21 'The Elegance of the Hedgehog,' by Muriel Barbery and May 19, 'Brooklyn' by Colm Toibin.

International Film:'O'Horten'   Link to related url for more information
decorative imageOdd Horten (Baard Owe) is a man with a lot of time on his hands. The character at the center of Bent Hamer’s wry social comedy,O'Horten, is a former train driver who struggles to adjust to the freedoms of retirement.

O'Horten is a wonderfully amusing piece, with Hamer demonstrating his innate ability for offbeat comedy. The strange atmosphere and long silences are reminiscent of the work of Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki, and the oddball denizens of the Oslo night are similar to the way-out characters of Jim Jarmusch’s 'Mystery Train.' Hamer’s movie is a compelling exploration of a loner who has had all the familiarity stripped from his world, and flounders as he seeks to find meaning in a life shorn of routine. Owe’s deadpan delivery is flawless, and his restrained performance offers few clues as to what is going on in Horten’s head, requiring the audience to ponder the motivations for his increasingly peculiar behavior. The mixture of humor and poignancy are kept in a delicate balance throughout, with Hamer gently steering his small cast through a film full of richly rewarding subject matter.

Author Talk: Linda Mutschler, 'Fast Track to Fine Dining'
book jacket image - click for card catalog entry

Linda Mutschler believes that there are few things nicer than bringing people into her home and sharing great food and inspiring conversation. However, as a top-rated equity analyst for a large Wall Street firm, she found herself at work or traveling virtually all the time. She knew that there were lots of people like her, who wanted to entertain but who had busy schedules and little knowledge about how to go about planning and cooking for a dinner party.

In 2005, after retiring from Wall Street, Linda set out to write Fast Track to Fine Dining. Over the next three years, she tested and retested menus and recipes, using easy-to-find ingredients and providing simple and straightforward directions. For each menu, she developed a detailed timeline so that you, too, can plan and prepare fabulous meals.
