May's title is A Magnificent Catastrophe: the Tumultuous Election of 1800, America's First Presidential Campaign, by Edward J. Larson. Our first true presidential campaign was so convulsive and momentous to the future of American democracy that Thomas Jefferson would later dub it America’s second revolution. It gave birth to our two-party system and featured two of our most beloved Founding Fathers, once warm friends: the hot-tempered but sharp-minded John Adams, and the eloquent yet enigmatic Thomas Jefferson. Author Edward Larson’s A Magnificent Catastrophe begins, “they could write like angels and scheme like demons,” …history writing at its evocative best! ---Choice Outstanding Academic Title.
June's title will be A Difficult Woman: The Challenging Life and Times of Lillian Hellman, by Alice Kessler-Harris.
